Cookie Sales Meeting

A big thank you to Sam's mom for opening up her house for the Cookie meeting last week.  The girls were provided with an overview about the cookies and Melissa led a craft activity on creating a lanyard that would help the girls remember the different kinds of cookies that they are selling.  We talked with the girls about setting a goal on the amount of cookies they would like to sell.  We hope everyone is off to a successful start!

Home Scientist Badge - February Troop Meeting

The girls enjoyed some hands on time with working towards their Home Scientist Badge.  We didn't break out for smaller stations during our meeting. The girls were working really hard at some big group skills and finding ways of how to work together as a large group.  We were going to talk some more at the next meeting about the meaning of the Girl Scout Law.  If you have moment, please read through the Girl Scout Law with your daughter and talk about what some of the words mean in the law. 

 We were able to get through a few experiments, but I know that some of the girls were really interested and hoping to do some more science experiments at home.  

We had a small discussion about static electricity, chemical reactions and different ways that we can use science in our life. 

Before we got started, the girls took a marker and made lines on chromatography paper and placed in a cup with a little water.  We didn't have the opportunity to observe what happened.  Here is a video that does a similar thing that they might be interested in watching/ trying:    Chromatogrophy Experiement

The girls observed a lab about density and made a prediction about what a lemon and lime would do when they were put in water.  Would they sink, float, etc?  The girls had some really good responses.  You can ask them what happened to the lemon and lime when they were put in water. 

We then formed some small groups and each group was given a bottle, balloon and two cups.   In each of the cups there was a different kind of substance.  The girls were trying to work together and decide who would be in charge of what.  The girls needed to put the substance in the bottle and quickly put the balloon on the bottle.  They then observed to see what happened and whose balloon filled up the quickest.  The girls determined that the group that had baking soda and vinegar created the biggest chemical reaction.    We talked about how did we know there was a chemical reaction taking place.    The three different combinations that were used in the bottles were the following:

1.  baking soda and vinegar

2. Alka Seltzer and water

3.  1 Mento and  Coke

Lastly, the girls did an experiment that involved Static Electricity.  We blew up three balloons and then put salt/pepper on a plate.  The balloon was then rubbed in the child's hair and placed over the salt/pepper.  The girls observed what happened.  We had a little conversation about positive and negative electrons.
